The day of Homecoming was filled with tension and anxiety as our JV and Varsity Girls’ Volleyball Teams played against our legendary rival, LA Quinta High School.
Before the game began, the Matador Monthly asked Tanya Truong—Senior, 4 Year Player; Back Row, Left-Hitter—who she thought was going to win, and she enthusiastically responded, "Bolsa!!! I believe that we can win this game!"
The La Quinta Aztecs won the first game, the final score totaling to a close 25-20.
The beginning of the second match was marked by La Quinta swiftly scoring 2 points before Bolsa called a time out in order to find their bearings. Unfortunately, La Quinta continued its streak.
Just as the La Quinta girls began to smile smugly to themselves, Bolsa stepped up to the plate, or should we say net, and broke the Aztecs streak. Our Matadors were determined to make up for lost points, and they even managed to score a few points and level the score to 5-10. Sadly, as the game progressed, the girls slowly lost their energy and as a result, a huge considerable gap between the Matadors and the Aztecs became apparent in the second match’s final score of 18-25.
The 3rd game began with a new surge of energy as the girls unleashed a scoring streak of their own commencing with the first point of the match. Alex Cervantes scored the second point with a merciless kill.
Having recognized the awesome rhythm they had established in the first few minutes of the game, the Matadors persistently gained points through Amy Nguyen’s continuous kills. In fact, our girls’ skills were so massive and deadly that the La Quinta Aztecs were forced to call a time-out.
Afterwards, Bolsa obtained more and more points through Alex, Amy, and Julie’s amazing blocks and vicious kills. Such was the ferocity of Alex Cervantes that her energy seemed to only intensify as the game progressed. Her continuous relentless kills created a point gap of 12-2 with Bolsa in the lead.
Our girls’ fans were screaming in delight, their support evident in the excited cheers and songs they shrieked throughout the game. However, even with their school’s support blasting behind their backs, the Matadors began to lose their lead.
It was close. Some would say much too close for comfort. We here at the Matador Monthly think the final score of 24-25 demonstrates nothing but our Volleyball team’s significant skills.
As soon as the final second of the third match ticked away, the gym exploded into cries of victory and jubilation, for Bolsa Grande High School had won, had defeated the Aztecs, and had brought immense pride to our school.
Sadly, the last game provided a swift victory for the enraged Aztecs. Though the score between the two teams remained incredibly close throughout the game, Bolsa ultimately lost. The fourth match’s score was 9-15.
Although Bolsa lost its final match, their fans were ecstatic about how the game turned out.
The game was filled with fast-paced plays and intense jumps, lunges, spikes, kills. The Matadors were able to demonstrate all of the work they've been putting in at practice.
There will be more games to come and the Matador Monthly is confident our JV and Varsity Girls’ Volleyball Teams will show them who's in charge.
