The start of our new Matador year was also the start of Mrs. Leticia Shaver’s time here at our Matador home. Although many new freshman faces shied away from eye contact and conversation, Mrs. Shaver was readily eager to greet her new Spanish One students. Within her first few weeks at Bolsa Grande, she has undoubtedly sprinkled her vibrant Spanish zest into Bolsa’s cultural melting pot.
Better yet, she owes a large part of that to your very own Matadors. “Students are so friendly and welcoming here,” Ms. Shaver commented with a vibrant smile, “and definitely down to earth.”
Not only does she possess a passion for the Spanish language, she also appreciates other world cultures in their entirety. Her love for travel and thirst for adventure has already brought her to Mexico and El Salvador; in the near future, she wishes to explore Spain and other parts of Europe. Meanwhile in California, one may find her sifting her toes through the sand of her favorite beach.
The Spanish language has been a part of Mrs. Shaver’s life since her youth. Now, at Bolsa Grande, she believes that she should “spread the beauty” of her language and “open up doors” for all her students. Along with spreading the language, she definitely believes in spreading the laughter; in fact, laughter is embedded into her very roots.
“As my mother used to say,” Mrs. Shaver told one of our journalists, “La risa es el lenguaje del alma.” In other words, Matadors, laughter is the language of the soul. So perhaps along with Spanish, Vietnamese, or even French, we can all learn a thing or two about the language of vivid smiles and loud chuckles.
